King of Cups

The King of Cups represents the qualities and responsibilities of a king combined with the understanding attitudes associated with the suit of Cups.

A king is a ruler, responsible for looking after a society. The King of Cups is a wise, calm, diplomatic, caring and tolerant leader. He is understanding and cares with the deep knowledge that comes from the heart. He has directed his creative powers into social responsibility.

Yet water needs to flow. The king looks sad, as though trapped by his position, his creativity dammed, pushed into the background. He has lost touch with the water (see how his none of his body touches the water). He has had to dam his emotions and imagination.

Yet, he can symbolise mastery in the field of the arts.

In readings, think of a person like this who is involved in your situation. Is it you, is it someone else (the person can be male or female). How are they affecting your situation - is their energy helping or hurting?
